Microsoft Office for iPad hits the App Store

Office for iPad First Look - now available

If you watched Microsoft’s San Francisco press event earlier today, you know there’s big news–the much anticipated Office for iPad applications are available for download in the App Store today as of 11 Pacific. Excel, PPT, and Word are all available individually and for free download. If you’re looking to just read Office documents from your iPad, you can use the apps for free, but editing rights will cost you an Office 365 subscription.

With the auto-save feature ensuring you won’t lose your work and the friendly ribbon interface and document editing abilities, you’ll see a lot of familiar features as you download each app. Plus, access your Camera Roll photos to add to docs or presentations, and get used to the 123 numerical keyboard in Excel. Get used to making your PowerPoint presentations on the iPad and then presenting them from it.

It’s said that luck favors the prepared. When it comes to job interviews, being well prepared is often what sets the best applicants apart from the rest. Here are 12 of my favorite job interview tips to make your next one go smoothly.

Before the job interview:

1. When possible, know the names and faces of the team you’re interviewing with; consider researching them on the company’s website, or on LinkedIn. Identifying shared experiences and interests helps set the stage for an easy, casual conversation during the interview.

2. Learn about the company’s products or services, and how they work. How does the company make money? How does it present itself by way of branding, marketing, and advertisement?

3 tips to rock your next presentation

Here are three simple tips to help give you confidence and rock the room at your next presentation or speech—whether you’re asking your audience to invest in your idea, support your team’s project, or give you their business.

1. Craft a story
Present a clear problem with a compelling solution, and put your audience at the intersection of the two, bridging the gap for them. For example, let’s say an accounting firm booked fewer clients in July than in June, and needs its CEO to approve a sales plan to reverse the trend in August. How could that plan be communicated to the CEO as a story, telling him how he can achieve his broader goals for the company?

Back to school with technology

Classrooms have gone digital, and with that comes a new set of teaching tools with the power to change everything you do as a teacher—from tracking grades to communicating with students and posting assignments and activities your class can access at all times. As you’re heading back into the classroom with a whole year stretched before you, here are three tips to get started with your digital classroom:

1. Try a new tech tool every month.
Find out what your students need most: more connection to each other, the ability to use iPads for their classwork, or perhaps the ability to complete and turn in assignments online? Pick an area you can start with and embrace one new piece of technology this month. Maybe it’s creating a classroom webpage or wiki, or just using school iPads in the classroom once a week. Monitor your students’ feedback, make adjustments as needed, and then commit to a new technology challenge for October.
