Flash/Flex developer poll: What platforms do you want to write for?

Adobe Systems recently released AIR 2.5, with support for running applications on Google Android and BlackBerry OS devices (with additional tools available from RIM for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet). Add that to the existing Packager for iPhone that’s included with Flash Professional CS5, and upcoming support for Google TV and Samsung Smart TV, and Flash/Flex/ActionScript developers have a lot of platforms for which they can create applications.

Help us sort through the possibilities for future developer training at lynda.com. If you work with Flash or Flex, which of the following platforms are you hoping to write applications for?

Vote! Vendor, company, publisher… what term do you prefer?

On nearly every lynda.com page on the site, there’s a drop-down menu that is labeled as Vendor. We’re working on updating our site, and there’s been some debate about continuing to use the word Vendor to describe those companies that create the software that we have training for.

We need your input: Is it more intuitive to simply call them ‘companies’? Do you tend to recognize them as ‘publishers’? Or is ‘vendor’ the perfect word for our menu? Let us know what word you would pick.

LinkedIn has over 50 million members

For quite awhile now, lynda.com has had a Network group on LinkedIn. We post lynda.com jobs there, and welcome members to post news articles and start discussions. Our blog’s RSS feed is automatically posted to our News area.

However, of all the social media networks we utilize (including Twitter and Facebook), LinkedIn is our least active group, even though it has over 50 million members in over 200 countries.

So, we’d like to know: How do you use LinkedIn? That is, if you use it at all.

For a while now, lynda.com has published ‘New Releases’ announcements, a podcast, and a monthly newsletter. In the last few months, we’ve been reaching out via social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as launching this blog to help broaden our communication with both members and non-members about new products and new features.

How do you get your lynda.com news and new releases fix? We’re guessing that if you’re reading this post, you get at least some of it via this blog, but we’re also wondering just how many other ways you stay up to date on us. Our Creative Inspirations series in the Online Training Library® is so popular that we’ve decided to distribute it on disc as well as online. We are currently building a new DVD interface so these documentaries can be viewed at home on televisions, sold in museum stores, and so on.

lyndaRecently we launched Certificates of Completion; a new tracking system that awards certificates to active members who complete a course in our Online Training Library. Each course completed earns a new certificate for that course. The question was bound to come up – will we ever offer tests and “real” certification; something that assesses a member’s actual skill?

At this point we have no plans to offer tests, though I’m curious to hear your opinions on ideas we’ve discussed internally. The easiest type of test to implement would be multiple-choice questions that would test your memorization of the course’s key points. From our end, this type of test would require upfront work to write the questions, but then could be run automatically, just like our current Certificates of Completion. We would probably have to charge for these tests as we would have costs associated with creating them, but the extra fees would nominal.

As a long time educator, I’m not a fan of multiple-choice testing. I think it tests memorization and rote learning skills instead of critical thinking skills, artistic skills, problem solving skills, or communication skills.

If we were to introduce assessment, I’d prefer that it be in the form of active learning assignments that would demonstrate true understanding versus good test-taking skills. One idea is to implement a Certificates of Merit program that could be overseen by industry experts, or we could open up the award process via a community-voting engine. Once the certification becomes performance-based rather than test-taking based, the overhead for us to manage and implement would be higher, and this would likely have to be a much more costly type of add on to our service. But the benefit to you would far outweigh that of the multiple-choice option: Employers and potential clients would have proof that you really know your stuff, I suppose we could even offer each of these options, if there were a demand.
