Another you-asked-for-it new feature: lynda.com Flash Beta Player

Published by Crystal | Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

We’re in the process of many new website and delivery enhancements right now. So many members have requested a non-QuickTime-based player that we’ve been hard at work, making it happen! The Flash player is completed and live on the site in beta test form, but we are still in the process of converting our 40,000+ movies to Flash, so not all courses are working with the new Flash Beta Player yet. For this reason, it’s not available as an over-all preference (accessible via My Training > Preferences), but it’s very easy to set it up as the preference for a particular course.

The lynda.com Flash Beta Player has the same look, feel, and functionality as the lynda.com QuickTime Beta Player, with an added bonus: the maximize this window button. Click to make the player fill your monitor window. When maximized, the button turns into a minimize this window button that when clicked, brings the player back to standard size.

Choosing the Flash Beta Player as a course preference.

To access the lynda.com Flash Beta Player for a particular course, click on the Course Preferences tab, choose Flash Beta Player, and then click on apply. This only changes the preferences for this course. For now, the Flash Beta Player is not available as the default player for all courses, but will be once all the movies in the library are converted; due for completion in December 2009. And yes, a WMV player is in the works too, but not ready for launch just yet.

New feature: Share information on every Online Training Library® course

Published by Crystal | Thursday, August 20th, 2009
SHARE button on each course listing

We've added a new feature: Each course now has the option to easily email, print, and share about it on multiple social networks or blog services with minimal clicks. Try it!

Even if you’ve never clicked on it, by now you may have noticed a Share button like the one above on many of your favorite sites. Its purpose is to expedite the sharing of news stories, blog posts, and other page content to one or more social networks, other blogs, or simply sending to your printer or bookmarks list.

Each of the courses in the lynda.com Online Training Library® now has its own AddThis Share button, located just under the course release date. If you want to share information about and a link back to the course, click on the Share button, then choose the method of sharing you prefer.

Sharing on Facebook, for example, gives the option to post the link to your profile or sending the information in a private message to one or more of your Facebook friends. Sharing on Twitter automatically creates a shortened bit.ly URL and transfers it to Twitter, ready for you to tweet.

Enjoy! And if you like this or any of our blog posts, the Share button is down here waiting for you at the bottom left of every post.

Notice something new? Redesign of member home page gives you what you want most.

memberpage

The lynda.com member home page has a new look based on what you've told us you want: quick access to new releases, Creative Inspirations, the blog, and more.

Current members – have you noticed anything new at lynda.com? We’ve launched a new current-member home page to help you quickly find the information you told us was most relevant to you, such as new training releases, new Creative Inspiration titles, and recent blog postings. Based on cookies, we can now detect whether or not you are a member, and based on that criteria, we serve up either a member home page or a non-member homepage.

If you haven’t signed in yet since around midnight on Wednesday, you’ll still see the old home page when you go to lynda.com. After you’ve signed in once and our cookies are accepted in your browser, your subsequent visits will start off at this new page. Let us know what you think!
