Lynda Weinman discussing the investment deal on Bloomberg West

Lynda on Bloomberg West, January 16, 2013.

Some of you may have heard our big news: lynda.com has raised a $103M investment from Accel Partners, Spectrum Equity, and Meritech Capital Partners.

In our 17-year history, we have never needed investment money because our business has been profitable and self-sustaining. We’ve been approached by investors for the past seven years on a fairly regular basis, and never seriously considered taking an outside investment. Bruce and I covet the creative and financial freedom to chart our own journey, and we weren’t sure what we would do with the money.

What changed? As we’ve grown to more than 400 employees, achieved record revenue numbers, expanded with offices in the United Kingdom and Australia, and built out a stellar executive management team, we now have a clear idea of what to do with the extra funding. Our plan is threefold: increase our content scope and output, improve our delivery platform, and expand internationally.

Bruce and I still hold the majority ownership of lynda.com and continue to be grateful every day for this opportunity to do what we love—we have no intention of changing that! We are really excited to welcome Andrew Braccia from Accel Partners and Vic Parker from Spectrum Equity to our board of directors. They are great investors who share a passion for what we have built, respect our vision, and welcome our deep engagement in the business.

We are thankful to have such an amazing culture, to be part of such an important mission, and to foster the many new ideas that haven’t yet been realized.

Stay tuned for more of what we’ve always created: effective, efficient training that helps people achieve their goals and gain confidence with their skills.

Thank you for all your support over the years, and we hope to continue to earn it for many more years to come!

— Lynda

Reflecting on my father and Steve Jobs

Lynda and her father, 1996.

My father and me, 1996.

My father passed in July 2011, and it was a time of great reflection for my family and me. Hearing of Steve Jobs‘ passing affected me intensely and has also spurred deep reflection—though of course different than that for a parent, but deeper than you might imagine for a person I have never met and only admired from afar. Like so many others who are writing their Steve Jobs stories, I feel compelled to share mine.

I know I’m not the first or last to write about Steve’s passing, but that’s not important. I had a similar experience with my father—I couldn’t stop thinking about his passing and what his influence had been on me and my family, but I needed to process it a bit before I could formalize my thoughts. Some of my reflections are personal, and some of them have to do with our company.

live with Lynda interview

Lynda interviews Dr. Michael Wesch in her first Live with Lynda webinar yesterday.

Yesterday, on March 30, 2011, I had the honor of interviewing Dr. Michael Wesch, Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University; an exemplar and pioneer of collaborative teaching methods. His YouTube videos–The Machine is Us/ing UsA Vision of Students Today, and An Anthropological Introduction to Youtube—have inspired millions. It was great to hear from some of his students and get a behind-the-scenes view of his process, including peer-to-peer teaching and assessment/grading. If you’d like to watch the archived webinar, here is the link: http://www.nmc.org/connect/2011/March/30

There will be more Live with Lynda interviews in the coming months!

Remembering Doyald Young, 1926-2011

Published by | Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Doyald at his drafting table.

All of us at lynda.com are mourning the loss of a true inspiration and magnanimous talent, Doyald Young. We were so fortunate to have worked with Doyald in 2010 to create one of our recent Creative Inspirations documentaries, Doyald Young, Logotype Designer. It is our hope that it is a fitting tribute to share our documentary with both members and non-members at no cost to honor his work and his life, his love of detail, and his joy in sharing the beauty of typography.

Watch Doyald Young, Logotype Designer, and please share the link to his documentary. He was an amazing man who made an indelible contribution to his field.

From the red carpet at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival

Published by | Monday, January 31st, 2011

Greetings from the 26th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival! This year, lynda.com is a presenting sponsor of this world class event, which gives us unprecedented access to the festival so we can share this wonderful experience with our members and employees.

Sarah's Key, opening night

Opening night of the festival featured the US premiere of the wonderful film Sarah's Key. The director, Gilles Paquet-Brenner, spoke before the film about his struggles to get the movie made, and how he persevered and brought it to life.

I’m struck by this year’s festival theme, ‘Dream a Little Bigger’, probably because it’s so much of what we encourage our own members to do. We aim to give our members the opportunity to help realize their dreams, no matter how small or how grand.

As we did last year, our crews will be covering the four major discussion panels taking place at the festival. These panels have historically included all the major players who will be in contention during awards season. Here are last year’s if you’d like to take a look at them again:

It Starts with the Script – Writer’s Panel
Creative Forces: Women in the Business – Women’s Panel
Movers and Shakers – Producer’s Panel
Directors on Directing – Director’s Panel

Finally, I’m particularly proud that two of our Creative Inspirations documentaries, Doyald Young, Logotype Designer and Richard Koci Hernandez, Multimedia Journalist, were accepted into the festival from 800 documentary entries. There will be three screenings of each film and we’ll be there with cameras to capture the Q&A session with members of our documentary production team.

We’ll be bringing you more coverage from the festival throughout the event. We hope you’ll join us and share the magic.

Many thanks to the talented teams at lynda.com

lynda.com staff & teams

Here are all the teams (and nearly all the staff!) at lynda.com: Production, Education and Content, Operations, Human Resources, Sales, Customer Service and Technical Support, Finance and Legal, IT, Marketing, and the Executive Team.

Many thanks to the teams at lynda.com for their tireless efforts. We had a great holiday celebration this past December, and got most people in the company to be photographed with their teams before we held our annual party.

Here’s a great video that the staff assembled to thank me and Bruce for the employee benefits at lynda.com. It’s testament to the passion and enthusiasm we all share for creating an excellent product and having fun in the process. Kudos to all; you make me so proud!

All’s play with Hello Kitty and tokidoki

Clockwise, from left: mystery HK princess; Kymberlee and Simone Legno, "Kitty Mama" Yuko Yamaguchi and me; posing with the inspirational Hello Kitty.

No one can accuse me of all work and no play this past weekend, as I attended a special Hello Kitty artist signing called the Three Apples art exhibit at Royal/T in Culver City, CA with my friend, fellow Hello Kitty fan, and former colleague Kymberlee Weil of introNetworks. Above is a collage of some of the day’s highlights, me getting a signature by ‘Kitty Mama’ Yuko Yamaguchi (Hello Kitty head designer visiting from Tokyo) and Kymberlee with Tokidoki creator, and lynda.com Creative Inspirations subject Simone Legno — at the launch of the exclusive tokidoki for Hello Kitty 35th Anniversary collection.

We saw an amazing art show, curated by Jamie Rivadeneira, owner of pop-culture shop in Los Angeles, JAPAN LA. Contemporary artists and Hello Kitty fans including Gary Baseman, Ron English, Buff Monster, Camilla d’Errico, Luke Chueh, Deph, and Yosuke Ueno are just a few of the 80+ amazing artists that have created Hello Kitty one-of-a kind artworks on display.

I bought some super cute Tokidoki Hello Kitty items, and got inspiration for my Halloween costume where I plan to channel a nerdy Hello Kitty.

Here’s what past attendees had to say:

Brad Weed

“Whether you’re there to gaze at the design stars, revel in the generosity or experience the amazing presentations and decor, you’d be hard-pressed to leave the AIGA Design Legends Gala without a new friend, a new thought or a new appreciation for America’s most esteemed design institution.

Vernon Lockhart
“The Design Legends Gala has been an amazing experience for me; it’s a wonderful thing to honor and meet our design industry’s current and future legends. Last year meeting Clement Mok and Gail Anderson gave me goose bumps, and seeing the youthful winners of the AIGA WorldStudio scholarships was equally inspiring for me.”

Stanley Hainsworth
“The Design Legends Gala was everything the critics had raved about! Experiencing these design legends stand up and talk about their amazing careers really made me feel like I was part of the proud history of AIGA that stretches over time and across careers, into a very bright future.”

Elva Rubio
“The AIGA Design Legends Gala does the best job of introducing and honoring the award winners—the presentations are thoughtful, moving, inspiring and beautifully produced. The room is as equally dazzling and in tandem promising an exciting and entertaining evening. I look forward to this event every year!”

Your support of AIGA and the Gala is integral to the continued success of the organization and profession. I encourage you to participate in this wonderful event. May we count on your support?
