Lynda interviews poet and scholar Noah benShea

Published by | Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

When I first heard Noah benShea speak at our locally organized TEDx in Santa Barbara, I didn’t meet him in person. Rather, he was projected on the large screen, captured in a series of thought-provoking video monologues that worked as interstitials between the live conference sessions:

Most of the attendees and I found these videos riveting, so I was happy to meet Noah in person many months later. He agreed to come in to our studios for an interview. I recommend you check out the TEDx video first, and then if you enjoyed them, watch our interview to get to know a bit about the man behind the poetry.

live with Lynda interview

Lynda interviews Dr. Michael Wesch in her first Live with Lynda webinar yesterday.

Yesterday, on March 30, 2011, I had the honor of interviewing Dr. Michael Wesch, Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University; an exemplar and pioneer of collaborative teaching methods. His YouTube videos–The Machine is Us/ing UsA Vision of Students Today, and An Anthropological Introduction to Youtube—have inspired millions. It was great to hear from some of his students and get a behind-the-scenes view of his process, including peer-to-peer teaching and assessment/grading. There will be more Live with Lynda interviews in the coming months!

Free Live with Lynda webinar starts Wednesday: Authentic Learning with Michael Wesch

Published by | Monday, March 28th, 2011

In a collaborative partnership, lynda.com and New Media Consortium (NMC) are initiating a series of monthly webinars called Live with Lynda targeted at higher education to inspire thought leadership, support best practices in education, and to share strategies for online learning. Every other month I will interview a thought leader who inspires us all in education. On alternate months, Laurie Burruss, Senior Director of Education at lynda.com, will feature best practices and strategies for online learning in higher education presented by either educators in the nmc.org community or by lynda.com authors.

Michael Wesch

Michael Wesch, Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology, Kansas State University, joins Lynda on Wednesday for a webinar interview.

On March 30 from 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m., I am excited to interview one of my heros in education, Michael Wesch, Associate Professor in Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University. Dubbed “the explainer” by Wired magazine, Michael Wesch is a cultural anthropologist exploring the impact of new media on society and culture. His videos on technology, education, and information have been viewed by millions, translated in over ten languages, and are frequently featured at international film festivals and major academic conferences worldwide.

The topic of the interview is Authentic Learning, and here is the short description:

Join the interview and discussion related to how teaching practices are shifting from the sage on stage to group problem solving and student collaboration. Lynda interviews Michael Wesch about his personal journey as a teacher, the challenges he faced as he changed his approach, the successes and barriers to making the change, and watch as he and a few of his students showcase some of their current projects.

Learn more about Michael and his work at Kansas State University on its site. See his student collaborative work on his YouTube channel.

Jane Hart is a social business consultant who founded the Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies. One of her recent projects was to gather from 545 learning professionals around the world their shared Top 10 Tools for Learning. From that list, Jane generated the Top 100 Tools for Learning 2010. I went through this list, grouped these tools by topic, and matched those that were applicable to their corresponding courses in the Online Training Library®:

Moodle training for teachers and students

Published by | Friday, May 29th, 2009

Chris MattiaThe world of academia is abuzz this month with the recent announcement that Blackboard, the leading commercially available course management system (CMS), is acquiring competitor Angel Learning. The current issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education, Volume LV, Number 37, highlights this discussion with a front page article ‘Blackboard Buys Another Rival, to Customers’ Dismay.’ The article notes that many colleges are considering a shift to open source course management systems such as Moodle and Sakai, but the primary stumbling block is training and support for their faculty and students.

This week, lynda.com is releasing two titles in the Online Training Library® specifically for teachers and students using the Moodle open source learning management system. As the Educational Technologist at Art Center College of Design, I work very closely with the great folks at lynda.com to provide training and support to our entire campus community. Art Center has recently launched our own campus implementation of Moodle and the response from our faculty and students has been so positive that I just had to share this experience with all of you by creating these two titles at lynda.com.

If you’re making the jump to Moodle for your campus, or even if you’re already using it, my goal with Moodle Essential Training for Teachers is to quickly bring you up to speed on everything needed to build courses in Moodle.  The companion training, Moodle Essential Training for Students, was designed to get all of the students at your institution a leg up in learning to efficiently use the latest version of Moodle. We’re looking forward to hearing what you think of the courses, and hope you’ll share your experience using Moodle or other open source learning management systems.
