New Artists’ Brushes from lynda.com author John Derry

Published by | Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Sample painting by lynda.com author John Derry, using his new Artists’ Brushes available for Photoshop CS5.

lynda.com author John Derry recently released a new set of Artists’ Brushes to work within Photoshop CS5. There are some really incredible examples of paintings done by users on his blog, as well as a preview of what these new Brushes are capable of.

John will be demoing these new Artists’ Brushes at the Southern California Adobe Technology Exchange in Long Beach on Saturday, June 19, and will be giving out a copy or two to lucky attendees. He will be co-teaching a Photoshop painting class with Russell Brown at the upcoming HOW Design Conference June 6-9. Class members will receive the brushes as a part of the class materials. There is still time to sign up for both of these events.

John will be back in the lynda.com booths later this month and we can’t wait to share the new training he’s working on with you.

InDesignSecretsLive print and epublishing conference recap

Published by | Friday, May 28th, 2010

The first InDesignSecretsLive Conference was last week in Seattle, Washington. Now that lynda.com authors Anne-Marie Concepcion and David Blatner are back from the conference and have had a day or two to unpack, I wanted to find out how the conference went for them.

With over 200 attendees from six different continents, seven lynda.com authors speaking, and lots of Adobe engineers, this Print and ePublishing conference was considered a success for David and Anne Marie, who joked on their podcast that since this was their first conference, they were only expecting about 15 attendees at one point.

David shared this inspired moment from the conference.

“Having one of the Adobe engineers who has been working on InDesign for many years give an impromptu lesson to some of us on behind-the-scenes features InDesign was eye-opening and exciting,” says David. “It led to another interaction with a third-party developer who quickly wrote a plug-in that solved a problem that had been bothering me. We’ll be writing that up in a blog post soon. That kind of real-life, real-time interaction was very exciting.”

One of the satisfying a-ha moments that Anne-Marie shared with me was regarding the Discussion Lounge at the conference.

“This was a smaller room with tables and chairs arranged for group conversations,” Anne-Marie explained. “It was a place to network, and for attendees to have more private one-on-one conversations with the speakers. I remember on Friday afternoon, I looked around the room and thought, It’s working! It’s working! because there were several discussion groups, each with one or two speakers and a few attendees engaged in very interesting conversations.”

Flash CS5 Essential Training is the latest training course from Todd Perkins. One of the cool features in Flash Professional CS5 is the use of IK animation, or inverse kinematics. IK gives animations a better range of motion making illustrated robots, machines, animals, and so on, more life-like. In the clip below, Todd gives an overview of what IK animations in Flash Pro CS5 are capable of.

3D training round-up at lynda.com

Published by | Friday, May 7th, 2010

There have been a lot of new releases in the 3D category at lynda.com lately, with more to come.

First-time lynda.com author Rob Garrott was just in town recording a new project-based course using Cinema 4D training. Rob has worked in the industry for 17 years as an art director, animator, editor, and an instructor at Art Center College of Design teaching 3D motion graphics, compositing, and motion design.

Veteran lynda.com author and channel manager for 3D and video, George Maestri, just wrapped up recording new Maya 2011 training. Maya 2011 is a really significant upgrade, and George’s new training will explore the numerous upgrades and functionality.

Jeff BartelsAutoCAD 2011 New Features course was released recently, and covers all of the new and cool features AutoCAD 2011 has to offer, from transparency, to the new 3D surfaces, to hatch creation. Look for more AutoCAD training from Jeff soon.

The highly anticipated Rhino 4 Essential Training by Dave Schultze was released this month, and is proving to be an exciting addition to the Library. In addition to building with the curve, surface, and the solid, members can learn how to create shoes for their robots and watch as their sketches come to life.

And in case you missed the New Deal Studios, Visual Effects Creative Inspirations documentary that was published in February, you might want to check out how this visual effects house uses Rhino and other 3D applications to create models, miniatures, and other computer graphics you will probably recognize from major motion pictures like Shutter Island, and The Dark Knight.

lynda.com member story: Scott Haines and the Virtual Choir project

Published by | Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

I was introduced to Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choir through a music-loving lynda.com author who had seen the video Lux Arumque on YouTube, and had written to find out more about the project.

It turns out that Scott Haines, the producer and editor of Lux Arumque, had relied heavily upon his lynda.com membership and our After Effects training tutorials to complete his truly massive project.

I was able to reach Scott via a Skype video call this past weekend to talk to him directly about his story. I hope you enjoy.

And by the way, please forgive the choppy edits of this interview. I was so excited to share Scott’s story with you that I conducted the interview in Skype, and used iMovie ’09 Essential Training to learn how to edit this together. It was my first editing attempt.

And now, for really impressive editing and production, here’s Lux Arumque, edited and produced by lynda.com member Scott Haines. Turn up your speakers and watch full-screen for the best effect.

For more information on Eric Whitacre’s projects, and Scott’s next editing jobs, check out Eric’s Facebook fan page, and Eric Whitacre’s Blog.

Elastic Audio: throwback to DJ record manipulation, but better

Published by | Friday, April 9th, 2010

Author Brian White has just released a new training video on one of ProTools most powerful editing tools, Pro Tools 8: Time Manipulation with Elastic Audio.

In this excerpt from Chapter one, Understanding Elastic Audio, Brian draws an analogy to the days of vinyl and tape:

“Elastic Audio allows users to stretch or shrink slices of audio within the edit window, effectively slowing down, speeding up, or changing the rhythmic feel of an existing recording, all while preserving the original pitch. So, when I think about the origins of time manipulations, I think back to tape and vinyl, how DJs could slow down or speed up a record to match the tempo of the previous song, or how you could speed up or slow down the tape playback. The problem with this is that while it changed the tempo, it also changed the pitch.”

Brian wrote an interesting two-part Elastic Audio review on his blog last October. If you missed it there, check it out here and here.

For more tips from Brian, check out his weekly ProTools column at audioMIDI.com.
