Creating a complex illustration can be daunting, but by breaking the design into smaller pieces you can learn how to build complex designs over time. This week Bert shows us how to enhance a dragon tattoo illustration by concentrating on just the scales.

He starts with the sketch and then creates the scales using vector paths. Next, he applies a colorful gradient and a drop shadow to add some depth. Finally, he creates a new brush with the scales and paints in the rest of the dragon scales. And there you have it—a realistic dragon tattoo, right down to the scales.
