Monday Productivity Pointers: Accepting a payment with Square

Published by | Monday, May 6th, 2013

This week’s pointer is all about Square payment processing.

Square makes it easy for small business owners to collect payments from their tablets or smartphones. Using a card reader inserted into the device’s headphone jack, business owners can swipe cards directly, turning their phones into mobile point-of-sale systems. There’s no monthly fee, and you pay 2.75 percent per swipe.

In the first video, I demonstrate how to add an item to the Square Register app, add a discount, and perform an ad-hoc transaction. I even show you how to swipe the card, and how easy it is to give your customer a receipt.

In the second video, I take on the role of the customer; I switch apps and use Square Wallet, an app that allows me to pay for my purchases at a retail store using my smartphone. The Square Wallet app will tell me what nearby stores will let me pay this way. Find out how to get all set up and ready to go with Square Wallet.

Even if you aren’t sure what the Square Register hype is all about, watch the video and learn what it actually looks like and what’s involved. If you’re thinking of starting your own business, you don’t need a costly register, credit card machine, or a Merchant account to accept credit cards. All you need is a tablet or smartphone, bank account, and Internet connection!

I used Square fairly often but was frustrated at the time I had to wait to get my money. I found some competitors that didn’t hold my money for what seemed like forever and am a lot happier. One in particular that I love is a company called Moblized that offers the same flexibility as Square but allows me to get my money the next day. If you’re looking for a Square alternative, check out http://www.mobllized.com.

Hi Chris, thanks for the reply! I had not heard of that site, I’m on the website now (moblized.com, I think your hyperlink is bad) and it looks great.
