Poll: What new weekly tutorial series would you like lynda.com to start publishing?

Published by | Friday, February 18th, 2011

Deke's TechniquesIt’s official! Deke’s Techniques, the weekly video tutorial series of creative Photoshop and Illustrator projects in 10 minutes or less is a hit! We started publishing these weekly tutorials in January, and our members are loving this new format. While we will continue to publish the longer form courses that we are known for, we are ready to start expanding the weekly format to other subject areas—and that’s where you come in. Would you please tell us which of these weekly series you think we should add by taking the two polls below?

Check as many of the series ideas below that you would want to see available on lynda.com:

  1. Mike says:

It’d be great to have an “imitator” series… keeping us on point with trends. How to make that popluar logo (illustrator), billboard (phsop or indesign), trailer effect (fcp and ae or motion), etc…

  2. Lisa says:

I have been begging for a very long time for you to have a series on Screenflow. Even a short series would be nice. I was told that not too many people have requested a Screenflow title, but you have to remember not everyone is going to take the time to call in, e mail or post a request. Many people will look for it on your site and when they don’t find it they will move on to find it elsewhere. PLEASE give us loyal subscribers a Screenflow series. We have waited long enough!

  3. Greg says:

I have 2 requests. First, I would like to see “Pros in action”, professional developers, designers, photographers, etc. known leaders in the industry “tackling a real world problem (small) first hand, to actually see their workflow process, how they think, etc… Similar to what Chris Coyier did in his WordPress 3 tutorial (outstanding job)… for people just starting out, this really helps. It fast tracks the individual in the this new arena and accelerates them into developing their own workflow out of the tried and tested ones of those who are veterans in the field, etc. etc… Secondly, I would be very interested in seeing tutorials for developing games for the ipad, if this has already been requested, then I am echoing that request. If not, then I believe I am asking for what others were afraid to ask for =) Love your site regardless… keep up the great work!

  4. Jim says:

Please do a full series (beginner, intermediate, advanced) for creating mobile apps for android devices! Please!!

  5. Henry says:

I’d like to see training on ZBrush and E-on Vue tools.
I’d also like to see a weekly show on Maya Techniques. It is such a deep program that I can never get past its surface. Someone like George Maestri would be ideal. This would certainly cause me to extend my subscription!

  6. Henry says:

Like someone said re: keyboard shortcuts — hearing them is annoying. I would much rather you use the capability of Camtasia(?) to DISPLAY any keys the teacher presses on the screen like a caption. We could then go back and review them at infinitum.

  7. Stan says:

I would like to see additional emphasis on techniques for troubleshooting, where if things go wrong in a project and how to resolve them.

  8. walter steuber says:

I’d like tutorials on programming such as Visual C++, Java, Visual Basic.

  9. Bank says:

I would much rather see some Android development courses. For Android 2.x devices, but especially for Android 3.x.

  10. Mary says:

Would be interested in MODx — taking a web page, breaking it up into template pages and use of content manager.

  11. When I first started to learn French in school they started to teach us grammar a lot and a little bit of how to speak. I think this is the only problem with lynda.com courses. You learn software and what they can do.

What I like to see is a course based on let’s say a step by step of how you build an application for Ipad from A to Z. or How you create an advanced website from scratch (how you start design in photoshop, then how you slice it, then how you create the html, how to add keywords, how to add a online shop etc..) so the course is not only based on one application but on a project.

Another course I would like to see in lynda.com is how you create a theme or template for Joomla, or WordPress

  12. I would like to see training for Camtasia Studio

  13. Alexander Torres says:

I would like to see C# Intermediate/Advanced courses using Visual Studio 2010 Windows/WPF/ASP.NET.

  14. Gerry Procee says:

I’m interested in programming training courses for mobile apps like objective-c and android Java.

  15. @Gerry Procee We just finished recording our Objective-C Essential Training course. It is now in editing and should be published to the OTL in the next 6 to 8 weeks or so. Android and Java are on the horizon as well.

  16. @Alexander Torres: We’ve recruited an author for a C# Essential Training course, and expect to go into production in late Spring. For all the commenters asking for more developer courses, we will be making a lot of progress for that subject area in 2011. In the plan… Programming Fundamentals, Java, C++, Objective-C, C#, VB.NET, and more.

  17. Please up date the Facebook/Twitter tutorial. Both have made quite a few changes since your 2009 video. Most web site jobs now require a social media expertise.

  18. @Greg McCarthy and @Lisa: Yes, the volume of requests for Screenflow, Camtasia, Snapz Pro and iShowU has reached the level we can no longer ignore. A question back to you and anyone else that is interested to help us clarify our approach… What would you prefer; individual courses for each of these screen casting tools, or a single course named something like “Screencasting Essential Training” that covered best practices for environment and audio set up, lighting, presentation tips, and more and then a chapter for each of those four tools?

  19. @Michel Khater: You’re in luck! We have courses for creating and editing custom themes and templates for both Joomla! and WordPress in production. It’s like we read your mind… ;) Barring any unexpected schedule changes, both should hit the library in the first half of this year.

  20. @Henry: We have a ZBrush 4 Essential Training course in the works for the first half of this year. And I love your idea of having George Maestri do a weekly 3D “techniques” series. He’s got a couple of courses on his plate at the moment to finish (hint, hint George…), but let’s see if we can talk him into the weekly thing!

  21. @Shawn: Completely agree with you — we are very, very deep in photography-related Photoshop training, but not as much for the designer/illustrator. That’s going to change in the near future. Keep your eye out for a new series of 2-hour “Photoshop for Designers” courses. Also, Deke is working on a four part Photoshop Extended series of courses, focusing on how to create and incorporate 3D artwork. Look for the first installment to hit the library in late April or early May. And lastly (for now), Deke will eventually expand his “Deke’s Techniques” weekly series to include Illustrator techniques as well.

  22. Marie says:

I volunteer with a non profit and would like help understanding how using social network like Facebook and Twitter can improve the work we do? I notice that lynda.com uses them, but I’m having trouble seeing the benefit. Can you help me understand how it increases business or has a positive financial impact on your organization or business.

  23. Ron Longtin says:

As I’ve stated previously, your tutorials are severely lacking within the realm of 2D animation. I would really be excited to see something other than Flash tutorials, e.g. ToonBoom Animate and TVPaint Animation.

  24. Jos says:

I’m interested in learning how to customize a Blogger site and update on the current Blogger tutorial which is REALLY old.
    Thanks.

  25. Dori Melton says:

I would love anything on Typepad Custom CSS hacks or custom templates.

  26. Deborah Rheaume says:

I really need to learn a software named XMpie. This software is used in the printing industry to program variable data. Those who know this software arn’t sharing the knowledge. Can you help?

  27. Bill Armstrong says:

I would like to see visual studio 2010. Visual Basic, beginner, intermediate and advanced. Programming (beginner, intermediate, advanced) for creating mobile applications for android devices.

  28. Patrick says:

It would be great to see a “Foundations of Design” series akin to what you are doing on the Photography side.

I think that many of us have kind of fallen in to the doing this and don’t really have a background in design. I for one came from the technical side of things and know that it would definitely help me to improve the quality of results if I could learn more about the concepts and ideas behind creating better designs.

  29. Mike Schaler says:

I have a great need to learn how to program and implement fbml to add apps to a facebook page. I would really “like” to see you do a course on fbml and facebook app building and installation.
Thanks for all the great courses!

  30. Giuseppe Picaro says:

Pros in action! I double that one request!

  31. I’d like to see a course on using the Google Tools suite with a non-profit or business account. There’s quite a learning curve to the administration of the tools and I find their documentation not very helpful. It’s also hard to find any online help.

  32. Junita says:

Please do a tutorial on jQuery Mobile and Ajax for mobile, there’s really nothing good out there!!! It’s the next best thing!!!

It will also be great if you could use Mockjax to simulate the Ajax (for our designer and UID groups).

  33. Jim Beans says:

I’d like to see tutorials on Windows Server / Active Directory.
There are some out there already, but they are made by drab geeks that have no enthusiasm in the way they approach the subject, thus making it soooo boring to listen to.
lynda.com can put this right and offer something that is so widely used and depended on today, it would be criminal not to include it!

  34. Chris Bamford says:

I love everything about lynda.com and have followed for almost 10 years. Bought the books, and signed up to the site :) This is my first port of call when I’m learning new software, as well as looking for help in established environments.

However, sometimes I feel that the tutorials are still teaching me the same stuff I was taught all those years ago. Which is to be expected, everyone has to start somewhere. These days I want come to lynda.com for niche training… the type of training that you can’t get just by asking the guy next to you.

Perhaps a detailed survey of your user/customer base rather than polls of the type above might be more valuable. It could also be worth ‘scoring’ the user replies, and adding weight to customers like me, who have been with you for several years and are most likely to continue to be customers if the training suits them.

    Thanks for being great!

  35. Yousif says:

    MORE MOTION GRAPHICS PLEASE!

  36. Andy says:

I would love to have some courses that delve into theory. I don’t have a formal education in design, and as a result, I don’t have the foundational knowledge of type, color, etc. I’ve learned a little by self-study, but I would love to learn from an expert.

  37. Agree about updating Twitter and Facebook, especially for business use.

Also–creating e-books for the various sellers in different formats from hardcover books and from word doc.

  38. Hailey Day says:

I would love to see a tutorial on converting a WordPress.org site into a custom CMS implemented website with common requests, like event calendars, … I would also love to see an Expression Engine built site from A-Z.

  39. Artesia says:

I would like to see training on how to work with Mocha data in After Effects

  40. Scott says:

I would like to see training for still photographers who want to transition to combining still imagery and video. Now that many SLR cameras have HD video capability, the walls between still and video are falling. But many of us know very little about how to make a video, or the video editing software options available.

  41. Maxine says:

Help! We need a quick update to understand the new Facebook pages and how to set up and utilize.

  42. Elisa says:

I would love to see some more in depth classes on using Microsoft Word on Mac for more complex document design (layouts, graphics, etc.). I have a client with complicated needs, but the documents HAVE to be in Word which is proving quite challenging. (I wish we could just use InDesign.)

  43. @Meredith Blevins: we just published two courses this morning on how to create eBooks. Check out InDesign CS5 to EPUB, Kindle and iPad to see if that meets your needs.

  44. @Maxine: Garrick Chow is in the studio this week recording an update to the Facebook Essential Training course. Let me see if he can author a short blog post with some tips to help you out while that update is in production.

  45. @Scott and @Pavel: We’re putting the final touches on our first course on how to shoot video with a DSLR camera. Look for this course, Video for Photographers: Shooting with a DSLR to show up in the library later this month!! (I’ve seen a sneak peek, and it’s going to be awesome…)

  46. Mark Hale says:

Fresher content on web accessibility is sorely needed, since accessibility standards have been updated, and the topic is rising in importance.

  47. Brad Taylor says:

I’ve been making films for about 3 years now and I’m very excited about the cinematic look I can get with my Canon dSLRs.

lynda.com has been invaluable in helping me pull projects together, even at the last minute.

There are some software releases like CS5, though, which are an altogether different approach and are significant upgrades. This is especially true with PremierePro CS5, and it has the film community buzzing the way Final Cut did in years past. I love the basic tutorials to get you up and running, but I’d love to see a series based on deeper approaches and capabilities, perhaps even a project-based series that moves through the production of a small film/video project.

Hopefully, you have more tutorials in the works for PremierePro…I’m loving it over Final Cut these days!

  48. denisw says:

I’ve just taken a quick look at Susan Cline’s new “Google Docs” course and think it would be great if she could extend her teaching into “Google Interactive Charts/Visualization API”.

I’m looking for help in how to show data (in a database) as charts (on a web site) and whilst Google Interactive Charts looks like a suitable tool, Google’s own explanations on how to use it, are quite impenetrable.

lynda.com would make all that much easier to learn, I’m sure.

  49. Dennis Hughes says:

I’de love to see a tutorial on Bridge. There are so many features it’s hard to get a handle on them all.

  50. Amit says:

Modx revolution tutorials will be much appreciated.
