For quite awhile now, lynda.com has had a Network group on LinkedIn. We post lynda.com jobs there, and welcome members to post news articles and start discussions. Our blog’s RSS feed is automatically posted to our News area.
However, of all the social media networks we utilize (including Twitter and Facebook), LinkedIn is our least active group, even though it has over 50 million members in over 200 countries.
So, we’d like to know: How do you use LinkedIn? That is, if you use it at all.
If you do belong to LinkedIn, please choose five of the most relevant answers that apply to you:
As always, feel free to leave comments.
If you are active on Linked in, we’d love to have you join our Network and help to make it a more active arena for discussion. Let us know how you’d like us to use our LinkedIn group to help you in your work, career, or personal development.

One choice not on there was for research. I use it to research people’s professional backgrounds that I only know a bit about. That comes in handy if you have a job interview for instance.
I find several of the discussion groups very helpful (get daily emails with active topics listed): Women in Photography, NAPP, PPA Linked, Mac Users, Pro Photographers on the Mac
i have only just signed up to linkedin. i am trying to figure out how make the best use of linkedin, facebook and possibly twitter for social marketing for my website.
I would have to agree with both the above comments. No only is it useful for researching a potential client or position but the user groups are great as well. An additional tool I do like is the Amazon Book Queue that they have… I have used that for gathering some additional resources
Keep up the great work lynda.com!!!
A course on linkedin will be great ?
When you ask how do you use linkedIn, you should not restricted the voter to 5 vote only, because you will not have an accurate survey ?
Thanks for all of your comments so far! S and Matthew, you’re right, I think a lot of people use LinkedIn for research. Judy, the active discussion groups with the daily emails are a plus. Paul, we decided to ask for the five most relevant reasons to get an idea of the the more popular reasons our blog readers use LinkedIn (rather than for scientific research).
John, have you viewed our Social Media Marketing with Facebook and Twitter course? http://www.lynda.com/home/DisplayCourseN.aspx?lpk2=47759
I use LinkedIn, but I am sure not to its fullest extent. To have a course that would show me LinkedIn best practices would be very helpful. I have taken dozens of courses from lynda.com and I have found them all to be very professional and certainly well worth my investment. As my business grows, I plan to make lynda.com courses available to my staff.
I haven’t joined LinkedIn, although it’s been recommended to me repeatedly. I probably will join in the near future, merely to see what/how I might use it.
Hi
I also use it. At first it was to buid connections but I soon realised that the majority of people there were more professional than on other social media sites. So I began to build my profile, ask for recommendations etc.
The restrictions that Linkedin imposes makes the information more reliable and there are more people with a sense of direction there so the results of research is often more valid.
The many groups can be a bit confusing. It’s constantly evolving and there are a lot of different uses poping up all the time. Getting to grips with it and getting the most out of it is not an easy task.
Thanks why I looked it up here. To see if you offered a course on how to use it best.
Hi
LinkedIn has also been recommended to me repeatedly. Was looking for a workshop or course on best prartices. Wish Face book and Twitter course included LinkedIn as well.
I need a course to show me how to use LinkedIn as a professional networking site, that is why I have subscribed to lynda.com’s programs. Do you teach it here?
